The amount the end of the crankshaft of an aircraft reciprocating engine is bent. Shaft runout is measured by mounting the shaft in a set of V-blocks and holding the arm of a dial indicator against the edge of the shaft at its end. When the shaft is rotated, the pointer of the dial indicator shows the amount the shaft is bent or out of round.
Industry:Aviation
The amount the velocity of an object, measured in feet per second, is decreased by a force during each second it is acted upon by that force. Deceleration is normally expressed in terms of feet per second, per second (fps2).

The amount the velocity of an object, measured in feet per second, is increased by a force during each second it is acted upon by that force. Acceleration is normally expressed in terms of feet per second, per second (fps2).
Industry:Aviation
The ampere hour rating of an aircraft battery when the current drawn from it will drop its voltage to a predetermined cut-off voltage in twenty minutes.
Industry:Aviation
The ampere-hour rating of a battery when current is taken from it at a rate that will discharge it in five hours. A 20-ampere-hour battery will supply four amps of current for five hours, but if it is discharged at a higher rate, its ampere-hour capacity will be less. The five-hour rating is the rating most generally used for aircraft storage batteries.
Industry:Aviation
The ampere-hour rating of a battery when current is taken from it at such a high rate that the battery will be discharged in five minutes. The high current drawn from a battery causes the ampere-hour capacity to be much less at its five-minute rating than it is at its five-hour rating. The five-minute rating gives an indication of the way the battery will respond under the load placed on it by the engine starter.
Industry:Aviation
The angle between a beam of light as it passes through a medium and a line perpendicular to the surface of the medium.
Industry:Aviation
The angle between one side of a polygon and an extension to an adjacent side. The sum of the exterior angles of any polygon regardless of the number of sides, is always 360°.
Industry:Aviation
The angle between the chord line of a rotor blade and the reference plane of the main rotor hub, or the plane of rotation of the rotor.

dip
The angle formed between a compass magnet aligned with the earth’s magnetic field and the horizontal plane. Dip is caused by the vertical component of the earth’s magnetic field, and to correct for dip, a weight is often put on one end of the magnet to keep it horizontal. This weight is the cause of two errors found in aircraft magnetic compasses: acceleration error and northerly turning error.
