Company Profile:
Aviation Supplies & Academics, Inc. (ASA) develops and markets aviation supplies, software, and books for pilots, flight instructors, flight engineers, airline professionals, air traffic controllers, flight attendants, aviation technicians and enthusiasts. Established in 1947, ASA also provides ...
An electrical relay whose coil is in series with its contacts. The contacts are closed by sending a pulse of current through the coil, and the contacts remain closed until the current flowing through them is interrupted.
Industry:Aviation
An electrical resistor made by vacuum-depositing a thin film of carbon on a ceramic cylinder. Wires attached to each end of the carbon film allow the resistor to be connected into an electrical circuit.
Industry:Aviation
An electrical resistor made by winding a strip or ribbon of high-resistance metal or high-resistance wire around an insulating core. Connections are made to both ends of the resistance element, which is then covered with a baked-on ceramic material.
Industry:Aviation
An electrical shunt used with a millivoltmeter to measure current. The shunt is a low-resistance precision resistor, installed in a circuit in such a way that the circuit current flows through it. The millivoltmeter is connected across the shunt to measure the voltage dropped across it. The indication on the millivoltmeter is directly related to the amount of current flowing through the shunt, and because of this, it is possible to calibrate the dial of the millivoltmeter directly in amps or milliamps.
Industry:Aviation
An electrical storage battery.
Industry:Aviation
An electrical switch actuated by a sudden change in the velocity of the object on which it is mounted. An inertia switch is built into an emergency locator transmitter (ELT) installed in an aircraft. If the aircraft crashes, the inertia switch automatically closes and starts the ELT transmitting.
Industry:Aviation
An electrical switch actuated by centrifugal force and mounted inside of a piece of rotating machinery. Centrifugal switches are used in capacitor-start induction motors to disconnect the start winding when the rotor reaches a specified speed.
Industry:Aviation
An electrical switch capable of selecting any of several circuits. Contacts around the periphery of an insulating wafer connect to all of the circuits to be selected. The common lead is connected to a wiper that makes connection with the contacts, one at a time. This wiper is turned by a shaft through the center of the wafer. By turning the shaft, the wiper is moved to complete the selected circuit Rotary switches may have several wafers stacked on one shaft to control several circuits at the same time.
Industry:Aviation
An electrical switch that closes a circuit when it is exposed to a specified high temperature.
Industry:Aviation
An electrical switch that has only two conditions, ON or OFF. In one direction of the operating control, the contacts are open (OFF). Moving the control to the opposite position closes the contacts (ON). A single-pole, single-throw (SPST) switch can select one of the two conditions in one circuit, and a double-pole, single-throw (DPST) switch can select one of the two conditions in two circuits with the movement of a single control.
