An electrical measuring instrument that measures the resistance in a circuit or component and shows its value in ohms. An ohmmeter determines the value of an unknown resistance by measuring the current flowing through it when the voltage across it is known.
Industry:Aviation
An electrical measuring instrument that uses a single current-measuring meter and the necessary components to measure several ranges of voltage, current, and resistance. The different functions and ranges are selected by switches or by jacks into which test leads are plugged.
Multimeters are often called VOMs, because they are able to measure volts, ohms, and milliamps. Multimeters with a digital readout are called DVOMs.
Industry:Aviation
An electrical measuring instrument used to measure electrical pressure. Most of the commonly used voltmeters are actually current measuring instruments in series with a high resistance which limits the amount of current that can flow through the meter. The deflection of the meter pointer is proportional to the voltage across the meter and resistance combination.
Industry:Aviation
An electrical meter that measures the amount of current per unit of time used in a circuit.
Industry:Aviation
An electrical power system in which all of the operating generators are connected to a single power bus.
Industry:Aviation
An electrical receptacle whose sockets are arranged in such a way that its mating plug can be inserted in only one way. Nonpolarized receptacles for house wiring have two flat sockets of the same size, and a plug can be inserted with either pin fitting into either socket.
Polarized receptacles used in modern house wiring have three sockets. A round socket is connected to the earth ground, and the socket for the common wire (the white wire) is wider than the socket for the “hot” wire (the black wire).
Industry:Aviation
An electrical rectifier circuit using four diodes to change alternating current into full-wave rectified direct current.
Industry:Aviation
An electrical reference point in a piece of equipment that is not connected to the earth ground. A chassis ground is also called a floating ground.
Industry:Aviation
An electrical relay connected in such a way that it chops up direct current and produces pulsating DC. The pulsating DC is sent through the primary winding of the magneto coil where it induces a high voltage in the secondary winding. This high voltage causes a spark to jump across the gap in a spark plug. Induction vibrators are used with magnetos to produce a hot spark for starting the engine when the magneto is turning slowly.
Industry:Aviation
An electrical relay in which both the coil and the contacts are enclosed in a protective housing. Enclosed relays are used in aircraft for the main battery contactor and for the starter relay.
