Company Profile:
Aviation Supplies & Academics, Inc. (ASA) develops and markets aviation supplies, software, and books for pilots, flight instructors, flight engineers, airline professionals, air traffic controllers, flight attendants, aviation technicians and enthusiasts. Established in 1947, ASA also provides ...
A visual indicator around a wind sock or tetrahedron designed to show the traffic pattern for each runway. Segmented circles are used at airports without operating control towers, and which have some runways with right-hand traffic patterns and others with left-hand patterns.
Industry:Aviation
A visual maneuver accomplished by a pilot at the completion of an instrument approach to permit a straight-in landing on a parallel runway not more than 1,200 feet to either side of the runway to which the instrument approach was conducted.
Industry:Aviation
A visual navigational aid displaying flashes of white and/or colored light. These flashes indicate the location of an airport, a heliport, a landmark, a certain point of a Federal airway in mountainous terrain, or an obstruction. The colors and meaning of the more commonly used beacons are: Color Meaning white and green ---------------------------------------lighted land airport green----------------------------------------------------lighted land airport white----------------------------------------------------unlighted land airport white and yellow--------------------------------------lighted water airport yellow --------------------------------------------------lighted water airport green, yellow and white------------------------------lighted heliport white (dual peaked) and green ---------------------- military airport white and red ------------------------------------------landmark or navigation point
Industry:Aviation
A visual presentation of data in which the entire quantity is shown as a circle. Each portion of the data is shown as a segment of the circle. Circle graphs are also called pie charts, because all the data resembles a complete pie, and each individual portion resembles a slice of the pie.
Industry:Aviation
A volatile organic chemical solvent that is soluble in water and is used as a solvent for vinyl and nitrocellulose films. MEK is an efficient solvent for removing oily contaminants from ignition system components and for cleaning and preparing surfaces for priming or painting. MEK’s chemical formula is CH3COC2H5.
Industry:Aviation
A volatile, highly flammable liquid that may be used to prime the cylinders of an aircraft engine for starting under extremely cold conditions.
Industry:Aviation
A voltage control used with some of the simpler direct current generators. The voltage sensor is an electromagnetic relay whose coil is connected across the generator output. The relay contacts are in the generator field circuit. As soon as the generator output voltage reaches the value for which the voltage regulator is set, the electromagnetic field in the relay pulls the contacts open. Field current is reduced and the generator output voltage drops. As soon as the voltage is low enough, the relay contacts close and field current again flows. The contacts vibrate open and closed several hundred times a minute to hold the generator voltage within the desired range.
Industry:Aviation
A voltage existing within an alloy of metals or in any type of electrochemical cell. The electrode potential is caused by chemical differences of the materials involved, and it causes electrons to flow within the material any time there is a conductive path between the different materials.
Industry:Aviation
A voltage measuring instrument that displays the voltage in discrete numbers, rather than by the position of a needle over a calibrated dial.
Industry:Aviation
A voltage placed across the PN junction in a semiconductor device, with the positive voltage connected to the N-material and the negative voltage to the P-material. When the PN junction in a diode or a transistor is reverse-biased, the depletion area is enlarged so electrons cannot cross the junction to flow in the external circuit.
