Company Profile:
Aviation Supplies & Academics, Inc. (ASA) develops and markets aviation supplies, software, and books for pilots, flight instructors, flight engineers, airline professionals, air traffic controllers, flight attendants, aviation technicians and enthusiasts. Established in 1947, ASA also provides ...
A type of rectifier circuit used to change alternating current into direct current that uses both the positive and negative alternation of the AC.
Industry:Aviation
A type of rectifier using a cadmium and selenium junction to control the flow of electrons. When a layer of selenium is deposited on an aluminum base, and a cadmium alloy plate is pressed against the selenium, a barrier is formed between the selenium and the cadmium. Electrons can easily pass through this barrier from the cadmium, through the selenium to the aluminum, but they cannot pass through the barrier in the opposite direction.
Industry:Aviation
A type of reduction gear system that allows one shaft to turn at a speed slower than that of another shaft. A pinion is a small-diameter spur gear, whose teeth mesh with those on the larger-diameter gear. The pinion turns faster than the larger gear, and it turns in the direction opposite to that of the larger gear.
Industry:Aviation
A type of reinforced plastic resin made by laminating, or stacking together, layers of cloth, paper, or wood that are impregnated with plastic resin. The layers of the material are forced together by pressure, and the resin is cured with heat.
Industry:Aviation
A type of relay-operated multipole electrical switch. A relay moves the wiper, or selector, of the switch one step at a time, as pulses of electrical energy are sent into the relay coil. Stepping relays are used in rotary-dial telephone systems.
Industry:Aviation
A type of remote indicating system that uses synchro motors in the transmitter and the indicator. These synchro motors have a three-phase stator and a single-phase rotor. The stators and rotors of the transmitter and indicator are connected in parallel, and alternating current is used to excite the rotors. The AC exciting the rotor induces a voltage in the three phases of the transmitter stator, and since the two stators are connected in parallel, the magnetic fields in the indicator are the same as those in the transmitter. The magnetic fields in the indicator stator pull its rotor around so it assumes the same position as the rotor in the transmitter. An Autosyn system is a form of synchro system.
Industry:Aviation
A type of resistor that has metal ferrules, or bands, around each end so it can be mounted in a standard fuse clip.
Industry:Aviation
A type of ring cowling used over a single-row radial engine. The Townend ring, often called a speed ring, directs the air smoothly over the cylinder heads to increase the cooling and decrease the drag.
Industry:Aviation
A type of roller bearing installation in a gas turbine engine in which the outer race is installed in an oil damper compartment whose inside diameter is a few thousandths of an inch larger than the outside diameter of the outer race. Oil under pressure fills the oil damper compartment and allows the bearing to compensate for sight misalignment and to absorb vibrations of the shaft.
Industry:Aviation
A type of rotorcraft whose main rotors are not connected to the engine except for the initial spin-up. Aerodynamic forces cause the main rotor to spin during normal flight. An autogiro is a form of gyroplane.
