A small coil installed in an alternating current circuit to furnish inductive reactance to cancel some of the capacitive reactance in the circuit. Reactors normally have very little resistance.

A small coil that rides inside an air gap in a permanent magnet or electromagnet inside a radio speaker. The voice coil is physically attached to the speaker cone, and alternating current from the output of an audio amplifier flows through it.
Current flowing in the voice coil produces a magnetic field that either aids or opposes the magnetic field in which the coil is mounted. This interaction between the magnetic fields moves the coil in and out, and as it moves, it vibrates the speaker cone and produces sound waves in the air.

A small deflector that can be raised into the air flowing over an airfoil. When a spoiler is raised into the airstream, it disturbs the smooth flow of air and destroys part of the lift the airfoil is producing. Spoilers are used on high-performance sailplanes to decrease the lift so they will not float during landing.

A small explosive charge that drives a cutter through the seal in a high-rate discharge (HRD) bottle of fire extinguishing agent. The container of fire extinguishing agent is sealed with a thin metal diaphragm. When the operator presses the AGENT RELEASE switch in the cockpit, the squib is ignited. As the squib burns, it produces enough gas pressure to drive a cutter through the metal diaphragm and release the agent into the fire extinguishing system.

A small flap located at the rear of the cowling for a reciprocating engine. Opening the cowl flap increases the amount of cooling air flowing through the engine by decreasing the pressure at the point the air leaves the engine compartment.
