Company Profile:
Founded in 1941, the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) is an international association representing the interests of professionals in surveying, mapping and communicating spatial data relating to the Earth's surface. Today, ACSM's members include more than 7,000 surveyors, ...
(1) Any one of three methods of spatial resection, developed by Earl F. Church, that have been used to determine tilt. (2) In particular, a rigorous, mathematical method of determining all three angles (tilt, swing and azimuth) of orientation of an aerial photograph by solving first for the coordinates of the perspective center (given the coordinates of at least three ground points and the coordinates of the corresponding images) and then solving for the angles; the process is repeated, using Newton's method of successive approximation, until the result is satisfactory.

A formula used in solving for the location of a point P, in the plane, from the two angles measured at that point between three other points, using the distances and angle from the central point of the three to the other two. Denoting the measured angles by A and B, the corresponding subtended distances by a and b, and the angle between a and b by C, three auxiliary angles M, N, and Z are determined by the formulae: M = 180 (A+B+C)/2, tan Z = (a sin B)/(b sin A) and (tan N)/(tan M) = (1 - tan Z)/(1 + tan Z). Then the angles D, E at the ends of the known lines are found from D = N + M and E = N M, and the problem is reduced to finding P by intersection.
