A conformal map projection of the whole sphere into a two cusped epicycloid. It was published by F. August in 1874. The sphere is first mapped conformally onto a disk. A two cusped epicycloid is generated by rolling a circle with radius ½ on the circumference of the disk within which the sphere was mapped. The equation of the epicycloid is found in terms of the x, y coordinates of the circumference, thus mapping the 180° meridian onto the epicycloid. These same equations therefore map the interior of the circle into the interior of the epicycloid.

That bank of a stream or river which is to the right of the observer when he is facing downstream.

(1) The limit approached by the tangent to a curve as the point of tangency approaches infinity. (2) The line approached by a curve as the distance along the curve becomes very large.
Industry:Earth science
The array of absorption lines and bands that results from the passage of radiant energy from a source of continuous electromagnetic radiation thru a substance that absorbs such radiation selectively.
Industry:Earth science
Altitude above the actual physical surface, either land or water, of a planet or natural satellite. It is not the same as distance above mean sea level, which is a distance above a hypothetical surface.
Industry:Earth science
The error resulting from a change in a craft's velocity: e.g., the apparent deflection of the vertical, as indicated by a gyroscope (artificial horizon), when the craft accelerates.

A unit of area in the English system of measure, defined as 10 square chains (1 chain is 4 rods or 66 feet). It is exactly equal to 43,560 square feet or 4,840 square yards and is approximately equal to 4046. 8564224 square meters. There are 640 acres in one square mile. Although acre may be defined otherwise in some localities, these are local definitions and the word is usually qualified as builder's acre or Block Island acre. The English system of measures contains no legally defined unit of area. The size of the acre therefore depends on the length of the English yard, which is legally defined. By an ordinance of Edward I in 1303, the acre was defined as the area contained in a rectangle 40 rods long and 4 rods wide. With the rod defined as 5. 5 ulnae (yards) as defined by Edward I's iron standard for the ulna, the acre is 4840 square yards.

Resistance of the air to motion of a body moving in it. The term is applied, in particular, to (a) the resistance of the air to aircraft, projectiles, and artificial satellites, and (b) the resistance of air or other gas to the motion of a pendulum or other moving body used in a gravity measuring apparatus. A good, approximate formula for the resistance Fa</sub is Fa
