In a recent study, scientists revealed that rejected fruit flies drink alcohol to soothe their emotional wounds. Scientists placed alcohol saturated bananas and regular bananas in a glass tube where female and male fruit flies were present. Male fruit flies that mated only consumed alcohol 50% of the time, whereas unsuccessful males consumed the alcohol 70% of the time. The study shows that there is a chemical reward system through alcohol and provides an interesting argument for the chemical dependency in addiction. It also shows that alcohol consumption as a form of coping is not solely limited to humans and is a form of therapy for other species as well.
